6 Tips On How To Use Twitter for PR

Let’s face it, things are getting serious and social media is here to stay. According to statistics from Jeffbullas.com, if Twitter was a country it would be the 12th largest country – that’s 750 tweets per second. That’s a lot of opportunities to establish client recognition and improve reputation, so how can we take advantage of this?

Here are 6 tips on how to use twitter for PR.

1. Tweet good content. In my experience, users search twitter for three reasons other than entertainment – to learn something new, to answer a question, or to solve a problem.

2. Follow the right people. Follow the journalists and bloggers in your industry! Apart from the obvious benefit of reading news in your field, a survey in ‘09 said 50% of journalists get their sources from twitter. Follow twitter users like @sourcebottle, @profnet, and @helpareporter.

3. Cover events live. Go beyond the news release, articles, and/or blog posts. Twitter is perfect for talking about events, retweeting others posting about events, and using hashtags about the event to make your event searchable! My tip is to talk about the event instead of selling the event. #storytelling

4. Prevent crisis early. One of the best perks twitter has to offer is instant customer service. Search up your company in the search bar and reply to any posts that can harm your reputation. Chase bank is an excellent example of this, they have a twitter @Chasesupport just to reply to customers and solve their issues. Address posts that directly damage your brand’s image.

5. Retweet, favorite, and reply. Social media is about ROE, return on engagement. That requires engagement! Participate in conversations by retweeting influencers, favoriting valuable posts, and replying to posts you like. A retweet or favorite is the ultimate twitter prize. It means that someone valued your input in their conversation and wanted to share it with others.

6. Organize your followers. It’s important to keep a tab on what users like to read or post about. Twitter lets you set up lists and you can either make them public or private. This makes it easy for you to find relevant tweets, learn about your audience, and identify possible brand ambassadors or partners.

Obviously this isn’t all you can do to boost your twitter game, but it’s a start. Using these 5 tips on how to use twitter for PR can help you start an organic twitter platform, establish industry credibility, and directly improve the client-customer relationship with direct communication.
